Renting a cottage near Arvika: our guide for 2026

May 14, 2026

Arvika municipality has plenty of cottages to rent, from simple summer cabins to well-equipped year-round houses. We have been cottage hosts in Sulvik for quite some time. Here is what we know about where, when, and what to look for.

Renting a cottage near Arvika is one of Värmland's more affordable ways to experience Swedish nature. The market is fragmented, though: Airbnb, Booking, independent cottage owners. Prices vary more than you would expect. This guide draws on our experience after years as cottage hosts in Sulvik and conversations with guests who have compared us against other options.

Where in Arvika municipality the cottages are

Arvika is geographically spread out. Saying "cottage in Arvika" can mean several quite different holidays depending on the location:

  • Sulvik and Glafsfjorden (10 min south-east of Arvika). Water right on your doorstep, quiet roads, Glaskogen nature reserve 25 minutes away. Our cottage is here. Usually suits people who want calm and a lake.
  • Glava and the area south of Arvika. Forest and tarns, more remote, the quietest option. Cottages are often simpler and cheaper.
  • The Klässbol area. The linen weaving mill, classic countryside, often the classic red cottage with white corners. Good if you want to combine with culture.
  • Arvika town centre. Few cottages, but walking distance to town. More apartment rental than cottage, rarely with a garden.
  • Northern Arvika and the Värmskog area. Forested countryside, further from services. Good if you want to go fully off-grid.

Price ranges vary with location, standard, and season. Lakeside cottages in high season cost more than forest cottages in low season. May and September are often noticeably cheaper than July; winter cottages with heating cost more over Christmas and New Year than in normal high season.

Platforms to search on

Our guests have found us via several routes. Our summary:

  • Airbnb. Large selection, reliable reviews. Good for comparing options. Platform fees are added on top of the listed price.
  • Booking.com. Mainly hotels, few cottages. Those that are listed are often professionally run with more of a hotel feel.
  • Direct contact with cottage owners. Often a little cheaper than Airbnb if you can find them (via local Facebook groups, websites like ours). A personal welcome.

Our experience: start on Airbnb to get a feel for what is available and what it costs. Once you have one or two candidates, search for their name on Google. If there is a direct contact you will usually save something.

What to check in the listing

The small details determine the stay, not the number of rooms:

  • Water access. "Lakeside" can mean 10 metres or 800 metres. Ask for a photo from the terrace looking towards the water.
  • Toilet. Flushing toilet, composting toilet, or outdoor privy. Not unimportant if you have elderly relatives or children.
  • Heating. Wood stove and fireplace sound cosy but require someone who knows how to build a fire. Electric panel heating is safer for winter.
  • WiFi and mobile coverage. Many people forget to ask. In the countryside, 4G may be the only option, and some cottages have a weak signal.
  • Laundry and cleaning. Some cottages charge a departure cleaning fee as an extra, others include it. Rarely mentioned on the front page of the listing.
  • Nearest food shop. In the countryside it can be 15-30 minutes by car to the nearest larger shop.
  • Noise. Ask about the nearest neighbours. On campsites or cottage villages, noise from neighbours can become a problem.

What time of year is best

We welcome guests for a large part of the year.

  • Summer (June-August). The classic Swedish cottage holiday. The water is swimmable from mid-June. Book early: July is high season.
  • Early autumn (September-October). Our favourite. Mushrooms, mist over the lake, a nip in the air in the morning, still warm days. Cheaper than July. More about mushroom picking here.
  • Winter (December-March). Cross-country skiing, a quiet Christmas in the cottage. Requires a winter-adapted cottage with heating. Winter activities.
  • Spring (April-May). The ground thaws, birdsong is at its peak, a quiet period with few tourists.

Common questions from guests

Do I need a car? Yes, almost always. The local bus from Arvika town centre runs to some villages, but most cottages are not at a bus stop. A car-free cottage holiday in Arvika is possible if you are happy to cycle a lot, but most guests have a car.

How far is it from Stockholm/Gothenburg/Oslo? Stockholm around 3 hours, Gothenburg around 2.5 hours, Oslo around 2 hours. Norway is close; we have returning guests from there.

Is it safe for children? Generally yes, but check the lake shores and wells specifically for the cottage you are booking. We discuss safety with families at check-in.
