Sulvik is one of the few places in Värmland where dogs are genuinely welcome, not merely tolerated. Forest on the doorstep, a lake nearby, no neighbours. Here is what we have learnt from years of hosting guests who brought four-legged family members.
Dog-friendly cottages in Värmland are plentiful on paper. In practice? Many listings mean "we tolerate your dog in a small corner of the garden while the neighbours's children shout three metres away". We take a different approach: our cottage sits a little outside Sulvik, no neighbour has a fence against our plot, and the forest begins where the lawn ends. The dog does not even need a lead if it is well trained.
Why Sulvik works for dog owners
- No through traffic. The cottage is quietly situated; the cars you see belong to families renting or permanent residents. Dogs that lunge at vehicles have a calmer holiday here than in central Arvika or on a campsite.
- Forest straight from the garden. You do not need to drive anywhere for a morning walk. The path towards the edge of Glaskogen is within easy walking distance.
- Dog swimming within walking distance. Glafsfjorden is close and there are quiet coves nearby. Many dogs love to swim but dislike busy public beaches, so it is good to be able to slip away.
- No shared walls. The cottage is detached, so the dog can bark at a passing car without a neighbour complaining.
What dogs are allowed to do
In short: most things. We have no lead rules on our own plot, and over the years our guests have brought everything from puppies to elderly dogs without any trouble. Two things we ask:
- Dogs do not sleep in the beds. We have dog beds to lend if you do not bring your own; just ask at check-in.
- Dogs are not left alone in the cottage for extended periods. Not because we expect anything to go wrong, but because a neighbour will notice if a dog barks uncomfortably long and we do not want neighbours who become resentful of dog owners.
Walks around the cottage
Several options start directly from the plot:
- Short morning loops through the forest behind the cottage, suitable for all dogs.
- The shore path heading north, a longer walk on mixed terrain, good for dogs that pull on the lead.
- Longer forest walks up towards the edge of Glaskogen for dogs with stamina.
- Day trip into Glaskogens naturreservat by car, for dogs that can handle longer trails.
Glaskogen nature reserve is where most dog owners want to go. The trails are generally good for dogs: forest ground, few cyclists, no grazing animals immediately alongside the paths.

Allemansrätten and dogs: what you need to know
Dogs must be kept on a lead from 1 March to 20 August across the whole of Sweden. This is not a recommendation; it is the law. The rules exist to protect roe deer fawns, hare leverets, and bird chicks. In practice, this means that all of spring and early summer is lead season.
For the rest of the year, dogs may go off-lead if you have full control. "Full control" does not mean "my dog is friendly" but "my dog comes on recall the first time, every time, regardless of what it sees". If in doubt, keep it on the lead.
Practical things we have learnt
- Water bowl outside. We keep one on the veranda; fill it morning and evening, and do not forget it in the July heat.
- Ticks. Värmland has plenty of ticks. Frontline or equivalent a few days before arrival is wise. We have a tick remover to lend.
- Do not leave the dog in the car. Even on a cloudy 18-degree day a parked car heats up quickly. Plan so you can take the dog with you from the start.
- Vet. In Arvika there are several options: Distriktsveterinärerna Arvika (Mötterudsvägen 4, 010-122 87 00) has out-of-hours cover around the clock according to Google. Arvika Smådjursklinik (Solbergsgränd 2B, 0570-477 60) is a normal-hours option. Verify opening times before an urgent need arises.
- Food and treats. Maxi ICA Stormarknad and Stora Coop in Arvika have a pet section, but the range is limited. If you use specialist food, it is smart to bring a spare bag.
When it does not work with a dog
We are honest: sometimes Sulvik is not the right fit. Two situations where we would recommend somewhere else:
- A strongly prey-driven dog without reliable recall. There are deer on the plot morning and evening. A dog that bolts into the forest for two hours is a problem for everyone.
- A dog with severe separation anxiety. We are not on site to dog-sit while you head into central Arvika. Expect either to take the dog everywhere or leave it at home.
