Glafsfjorden, the lakes of Glaskogen and Klarälven river. Our complete guide to sport fishing around Sulvik and Arvika, licences, the best pike bays, pike-perch, seasonal timing and the sweet spots we use ourselves.
Fishing in Arvika is an experience like no other. Glafsfjorden, a stone's throw from Sulvik, is famous for its strong populations of pike and pike-perch: some years anglers land pike over 10 kg. But it's not just trophy hunts: the area offers fishing luck for beginners, families and fly anglers too. Here is our complete guide.
The waters around Sulvik
Glafsfjorden (1 km from the cabin)
Sweden's 16th largest lake, 30 km long. Dominant species:
- Pike (Esox lucius), the classic trophy fish. Big specimens exist.
- Pike-perch (Sander lucioperca), popular table fish, mostly from boat on summer evenings.
- Perch: everywhere, all sizes, all seasons.
- Whitefish: winter ice fishing.
- Burbot: rare, but present. Attractive to dedicated anglers.
Glaskogen lakes (25 min by car)
Many small forest lakes with stocked rainbow trout and native perch. Quieter, more remote. Perfect if Glafsfjorden feels too large.
Klarälven river (45 min)
The great Värmland river, famous for grayling, brown trout and rainbow trout. A classic fly fishing destination. High calibre, if you fly fish, this is the highlight.
Fishing licences: what you need
Sweden has strict fishing licence rules. Before you cast your first line, buy a permit:
- Glafsfjorden: about 80 kr/day or 400 kr/yearly. Buy at iFiske.se, works via app, the licence is stored digitally.
- Glaskogen lakes: separate permit, about 100 kr/day. Buy via Glaskogen.se or at local shops.
- Klarälven: separate licence depending on the stretch. Check iFiske for exact section.
Tip from us: buy the Glafsfjorden yearly licence if you're staying a week and want to fish multiple days, it works out cheaper.
Seasonal timing
| Season | What bites best | Best method |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (April–May) | Pike (spawning) | Spin fishing from boat |
| Early summer (June) | Perch, whitefish | Float fishing from pier |
| Summer (July–Aug) | Pike-perch (evenings), perch | Trolling, troll-rowing |
| Autumn (Sept–Oct) | Big pike | Heavy jigs, jerkbait |
| Winter (Jan–Mar) | Perch, whitefish | Ice jigging |
Best time of day: always sunrise + dusk. Mid-day the water is often too warm and the fish go deep.
Our favourite spots
After years of living here we've built up a feel for where it's worth casting:
- Spettsläggsudden bay (south of Sulvik): classic pike bay. Reeds, fallen wood, perfect structure. Best timing: May–June and September.
- The pier at Arvika harbour: accessible from land, perch and small pike. Good for kids.
- Vrångsälven river mouth (north of Arvika): where the river meets Glafsfjorden, good mix of stream and lake fish.
- Sundsudden: deeper water, pike-perch territory. Requires a boat.
- Forest lake X (we point it out to guests): a slightly secret rainbow trout lake in Glaskogen, often empty.
Renting a boat
Two options:
- Boat house & rowing skiff at the cabin: we have an aluminium skiff with oars included in the booking. Perfect for rowing and small-scale fishing in Sulvik bay.
- Motorboat: rent in Arvika harbour from Arvika Båtkooperativ. Book at least 2 days ahead. ~400 kr/day + fuel.
Gear
We don't rent out gear ourselves, but in Arvika you can find:
- Sportia Arvika (sports shop): basic rods and bait, decent selection
- Outdoor shop at the harbour: better fly fishing selection
If you really want the best, head to a specialist shop in Karlstad (45 min), but for a weekend Arvika is fine.
Family fishing
If children are with you, keep it simple:
- Float fishing from the pier with a worm or maggot, you catch perch quickly. No fuss.
- Short sessions: 1 hour max per attempt. Children lose patience.
- Ice fishing in winter is magical for ages 8+: a hole in the ice, a jig, and you hear the fish nipping.
Catch & release vs. table fish
We advocate C&R for big pike (over 80 cm), they're reproductively important and key to the population. But:
- Pike-perch, perch and whitefish are excellent table fish
- Rainbow trout is stocked for catching, take it
- Use pike pliers to release the hook safely
Local recipes
Got a catch? Here's what we do:
- Smoked whitefish on the deck: clean, salt, smoke 1 hour. Serve with horseradish potato stew.
- Pan-fried pike-perch in butter with dill, a Värmland classic.
- Perch on a stick over an open fire, primal and perfect.
Safety on the water
- Life jacket always: even if you swim well. Glafsfjorden is cold even in July and large.
- Mobile with signal: coverage exists across all of Glafsfjorden, but not in Glaskogen's deeper sections.
- Tell us your plans: we ask guests to let us know if they plan longer fishing trips alone.
Summary
Fishing in Sulvik isn't a gimmick, it's real sport. Glafsfjorden has produced Swedish record pike. For a sport angler our cabin is one of Sweden's best-placed bases. For the beginner it's a low-threshold introduction to Swedish sport fishing.
Book the week, load the rods, and get in touch if you want our latest report on where the fish are biting. We check the ice, wind and water level every morning, and we love sharing the info with guests who ask.
