Planning a family holiday in Sweden? Our guide to child-friendly beaches, day trips, rainy-day activities and everything in between, from the owners of Stugby i Sulvik.
Värmland is one of Sweden's most family-friendly summer destinations, and as cabin owners we see it every summer: children learning to swim in Glafsfjorden, parents relaxing on the deck, grandparents finding their way back to a childhood feeling. Here is our complete guide to making the most of a Värmland family holiday with Stugby i Sulvik as your base.
The beach: 1,500 metres from the cabin
Just 1.5 km from the cabin lies one of Värmland's finest beaches on Glafsfjorden. Shallow, sandy bottom, perfect for children:
- Shallow for 30 metres: you can wade out a long way before the water reaches your waist
- Sandy bottom: no stones, no reeds
- Pier + diving platform for the older kids
- WC and changing facilities on site
- Parking for 15–20 cars, rarely full except on the hottest days
Water temperature reaches 18–22 °C in July–August. Not the Mediterranean, but warm enough to stay for hours.
Classic day trips
Klässbols Linen Weavery (15 min)
One of Sweden's oldest linen mills, still in active production. Guided tours every hour, café with homemade cakes, gift shop. Children are usually fascinated by the giant 100-year-old looms. A perfect half-day outing.
Arvika Vehicle Museum (15 min)
For families with motor enthusiasts: vintage cars, motorcycles and tractors. Not huge, but charming. 50 kr for adults, free for children under 12.
Rackstad Museum (12 min)
Art museum featuring Swedish turn-of-the-century painters (Schwartz, Larsson and others) in a beautiful villa by Lake Racken. Not typically child-friendly, but for families with an art interest worth the visit. The garden is free to explore.
Pippi Trail in central Arvika
A short children's walk with a Pippi Longstocking theme, perfect for ages 3–8. Free. Takes 30–45 minutes.
Nature experiences
Glaskogen Nature Reserve (25 min)
Värmland's largest nature reserve. Short family-friendly trails (1–3 km) and longer hikes for the more adventurous. At Lenungshammar you can rent canoes for the day, a fantastic experience for children aged 8 and up.
Skutholmen
An island in Glafsfjorden, about 20 min by boat from Arvika. Picnic area, swimming rocks. Boat tours run from Arvika harbour in summer.
Birdwatching
Glafsfjorden has plenty of water and birds of prey. We recommend the tower at Spettsläggsudden: a short walk, great bird views.
Activities when it rains
Värmland is beautiful in the rain, but a long wet week can be challenging with small children. Backup plan:
- Bowling alley in Arvika: 4 lanes, café, perfect 2-hour activity
- Klässbols Linen Weavery: indoors, tour + café
- Arvika swimming hall: 25 m pool + children's pool + bubble pool
- Cabin life: board games (we have Monopoly, Yatzy and Catan), fire lit, homemade buns
- Arvika library: free, good children's section on rainy days
Food and adventures
Ice cream boat at Arvika harbour
A classic. In summer the ice cream boat docks at the harbour, children love it. Soft serve and juice.
Farm shops
See our farm shops guide for current tips on local food experiences within a 30-minute drive.
Grill evening
The cabin has an outdoor grill + firewood + deck. Buy local sausage and vegetables, grill until sunset over Glafsfjorden. Nothing beats it.
Safety with children
A few practical things:
- Boat or life jacket: if children want to paddle, ALWAYS use a life jacket under 12. We have 2 adult and 2 child sizes to borrow.
- Sun + mosquitoes: sunscreen in the morning, repellent in the evening. Sweden has both in abundance in July.
- Watch the depth: Glafsfjorden at the beach is shallow, but open water gets deep quickly. Keep an eye on small children.
How many days?
For a relaxed family holiday we recommend at least 5 nights so you can mix adventure with downtime. A week is perfect. Two weeks and you really decompress.
Pets
We are dog-friendly: bring the family dog. The cabin has a fenced outdoor area and Glaskogen is dog paradise. The only thing we ask is no dogs in the beds.
When to book
- Book 6–9 months ahead for July and the first week of August, our most in-demand period
- Spring weekdays and early June have good availability even 1–2 months out
- Autumn is quiet, perfect for families with small children who want the whole site to themselves
