A Taste of Arvika: Farm Shops & Local Food in Värmland

Värmland tastes good. Around Arvika and Sulvik there are farms, shops and cafés worth a detour. It's about craft, short distances from soil to table, and a kind of honesty in the flavours you only find in the countryside. Since the offering changes with the season and opening hours vary, get in touch before your stay and we'll share current tips, these are our fixed reference points.

Klässbols Linneväveri

South of Sulvik lies Klässbols Linneväveri (klassbols.se), an active linen mill with shop and production at the same site. Worth a detour for table linen, towels, gifts and a look at the looms. Check current opening hours and any tour times on their website before you go.

Nordells Bakery & Patisserie, Arvika

Classic patisserie in central Arvika. Buns, bread and coffee. We happily take our guests here for Sunday fika.

• Tip: Saturday mornings are popular, arrive early if you want a quiet seat

Grocery stores

Closest to the cabin in Sulvik is ICA Sulvikingen, a small local ICA ideal for quick top-ups without driving into town. For a wider range there are several larger stores in central Arvika:

• Maxi ICA Stormarknad Arvika (Långvaksvägen 4)
• Stora Coop Palmviken (Palmviksgatan 10)
• Stora Coop Styckåsen (Styckåsgatan 37)

All generally have long opening hours. Verify current times before late arrival.

Our favourite cabin food basket

If we were to assemble a "weekend cabin" basket of local character it would look something like this:

• Fresh bread and a bun from Nordells
• Pickled chanterelles when in season (our own foraging, see our mushroom guide)
• Butter, crispbread, coffee from the grocery store
• Local cheese or cured meat from one of the farms in the area, ask us for current tips

This is what we call "real Värmland on a plate". Works equally well for family holidays and a weekend in Arvika.

Tips from us

• Opening hours vary a lot with season. Call or check online before you go, especially off-season.
• Cash can be useful at the smaller farms that don't always have card terminals.
• The best fika is still on the cabin deck. Buy your basket and stay home.
• Seasonal sweet spot: May-July and September-October have the richest range.
