Värmland's largest nature reserve lies 25 min from Sulvik, 300 km of trails, canoe water, wind shelters. Our guide to the best routes after years of experience, seasonal timing, packing list and what beginners often miss.
Glaskogen is Värmland's largest nature reserve and a place that has to be experienced. 28,000 hectares of old-growth forest, 80+ tarns, 300 km of hiking trails. For many of our guests this day trip becomes the biggest experience of their entire stay, after years of seeing guests return from Glaskogen we know what works best. Here is our complete guide.
What makes Glaskogen special
- Pristine old-growth forest: some areas haven't been logged for 200 years. Thick moss carpets, lichen-draped spruce, crystal-clear water.
- Real silence: no light pollution, no motorways within earshot, mobile coverage fades toward the core.
- Tarns with warm-bottomed water: in summer you swim in crystal-clear water surrounded by pine.
- Closest to true wilderness south of Norrland: bear, moose, lynx, wolf pass through, even though you rarely see them.
Distance from the cabin
From Stugby i Sulvik to Lenungshammar entrance: 25 min by car. Other entrances (Glava, Ärlingsfors, Stommen) are 30–40 min away.
Trail options by difficulty
Glaskogen has trails for all levels, from short family loops to multi-day adventures. Specific trail names, lengths and difficulty grades are on the reserve's own maps and at glaskogen.se. We're happy to recommend concretely based on your experience and what you want from the day, just ask before your stay.
🟢 Beginner and family
Short nature trails around the entrances (Lenungshammar and others). Good for small children, first-timers, a fika walk. Allow 30 min to an hour. Often leads to a tarn or viewpoint.
🟡 Easy-medium: half-day hikes
Loop trails of a few kilometers with a fika break. Suitable for families with kids 8+. Ask us if you want a specific difficulty.
🟠 Medium: all-day hikes
Longer loops covering more kilometers with proper elevation. Experienced hikers, all-day hikes, longer breaks. Bring proper provisions.
🔴 Demanding: multi-day hikes
Longer trails with overnight stops in wind shelters. For experienced backpackers and adventurous types. Book shelter spots on busy weekends.
Seasonal timing
| Month | Conditions | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| May | Spring bloom, green forests, cold mornings | Mosquitoes start, bring repellent |
| June | Longest days, flowers, warm | Peak season, can be busy |
| July | Hot, blueberries ripen | Heat & water, drink a lot |
| August | Lingonberries, chanterelles, still warm | Best balance |
| September | Glowing autumn colours, cool | Our favourite. Pack warm |
| October | Snow possible at higher ground | Slippery, winter gear may be needed |
| Nov–Apr | Snow, frozen tarns | Snowshoes or backcountry skis, otherwise trails closed |
Packing list (day trip)
- Shoes: hiking boots with grip, NOT trainers. Trails are often wet/muddy.
- Water: at least 1.5 L/person. Tarns are OK to drink from if desperate, but bringing your own is better.
- Food: sandwich + fruit + chocolate. Energy goes quickly.
- Map: buy the official Glaskogen map on site or via glaskogen.se, mobile coverage is unreliable
- Rain gear: even on sunny days
- Mosquito repellent: May–August, MANDATORY
- Fika in a thermos: nothing beats coffee on a mossy stone by a tarn
- Firelighter: if you want to grill, wind shelters have fire spots
- Phone charged: for safety
The right to roam: the important part
In Sweden we have allemansrätten (the right to roam). You may:
- Walk freely in forest and open land
- Camp for one night in the same place
- Pick berries, mushrooms, flowers (non-protected)
- Swim in nature
- Light a fire, BUT only at designated places, and NOT during a fire ban
You may NOT:
- Drive motor vehicles off roads
- Damage trees or bushes
- Approach private homes
- Pick or harm wildlife
Canoeing at Lenungshammar
At the Lenungshammar entrance there's canoe rental for the day or several days. Paddles, life jacket and a watertight barrel are typically included. Check current pricing and booking on glaskogen.se. The canoe network covers many kilometers with overnight spots. Perfect for a multi-day adventure.
Wind shelters & overnight stays
Glaskogen has around 25 wind shelters (open wooden structures for overnighting). Free, first-come-first-served. Always have:
- Sleeping bag (summer +5 °C, spring/autumn -5 °C)
- Sleeping mat
- Headlamp
- Water + food
Shelters can't be booked, busy weekends they may be full. Plan B: tent + the right to roam (allemansrätten).
Bringing a dog to Glaskogen
Dogs are allowed but must be leashed from 1 March to 20 August (Swedish law, covers the entire reserve). The rest of the year off-leash if you have full recall. No special restrictions on dog swimming. Tarns are generally dog-friendly.
Parking and practical
Lenungshammar has a self-service payment box for the Glaskogen fund. Check the current fee on site or via the reserve's website before you go. Season passes are also available. Toilets on site. The parking lot tends to fill during summer weekends, so arrive early or late in the day. Other entrances (Glava, Ärlingsfors, Stommen) have smaller lots and the same principle.
Safety
- Tell us if you're planning a longer hike, we check that you've returned
- The phone has good signal near entrances, weaker in the core
- Emergency number: 112 works even with weak signal
- Wild animals: bears avoid humans. Make noise if walking alone.
